In the Low Countries, the taverns were the center of social life of the popular classes. They gather there to smoke with a drink of beer, play cards, or to listen to the reading of the Gazette. Here, David Teniers II represents a group of three men smoking with a fireplace. In the background, a fourth urine in a basin. In this scene, the characters are stereotypes of "smoking".
